Evaluation of the character and dynamics of structural changes in hard tooth tissues during hypothyroidism (experimental study)

Abstract

The work was carried out on experimental material. An experimental model of hypothyroidism in laboratory animals was obtained. Thyroidectomy was performed in 58 white male rats of the Wistar line with a body weight of 250-300 g, sexually mature at the age of 8-9 months. The operation was performed under general anesthesia. In the postoperative period, rats were kept under optimal conditions. The rats were removed from the experiment on the 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, and 35th day. As a control, 28 rats were used, which did not undergo thyroidectomy. The teeth of rats were selected for histological examination. At histological examination of the teeth of rats on the 7th day, structural changes in the hard tissues of the tooth were not detected. In the pulp of the tooth, hemodynamic disorders, full veins, erythrostasis, diapedic hemorrhages and edema in perivascular spaces are observed. On the 14th day in the enamel, dentin and cement pathological changes were not detected. In odontoblasts, there were signs of small-dropped hydropic dystrophy. On the 21st day in the enamel narrow slits were discovered in inter-prismatic spaces, and the pattern of the prisms was blurred. In the dentin, there is an increase in tubules, signs of hydrophilic and balloon dystrophy of odontoblasts. In cement, the areas of starting cementolysis are determined. In the tooth pulp diffuse edema and swelling of collagen fibers. On the 28th day, dystrophic changes were detected in the enamel, the vacuolization of the enamel prisms, and the increase in the number of inter-prismatic gaps. In the dentin, there is an increase in tubules, foci of decay of the main substance, atrophy and deformation of odontoblasts. In the cement, cavities are found due to cementolysis. On the 35th day, the dystrophic and destructive changes described above become widespread.
