Morphological characteristics of hard tooth tissues with carious lesions on background of hypothyroidism

Abstract

The work is performed on surgical material. Histological examination of tooth sections was carried out in 78 patients with caries. The teeth were fixed in a 10 % buffered formalin solution, then decalcified with trichloroacetic acid. After completion of decalcification, the teeth were washed in 96 % alcohol for 3-4 days, then poured into paraffin. From the paraffin blocks, sections were prepared that were stained with hematoxylin according to Van Gison, toluidine blue, according to Mallory, the Schick reaction. The surgical material is divided into 3 groups: I group (comparison group) comprised 26 teeth removed for caries without hypothyroidism; Group II consisted of 26 teeth removed from caries in patients with hypothyroidism; Group III consisted of 26 teeth removed for caries in patients with hypothyroidism and complex treatment with antioxidants. In caries, disintegration of the inter-pristine material, softening of the enamel, remineralization of the dentin, development of the inflammatory process and dystrophic changes, necrobiosis and necrosis of the tissues, expansion and deformation of the tubular lumen, development of reactive changes in the tooth pulp are observed. With a carious lesion of teeth against the background of hypothyroidism, the softening focus is more common and captures many prisms, the softening site is larger, small secondary softening points are determined. The processes of connective tissue disorganization are more pronounced. Inflammatory infiltration is more intense. With the use of antioxidants the foci of carious lesions are smaller in size, the surface, organic matrix is not damaged, the enamel-dentine border is partially damaged. Inflammatory process is weakly expressed. The best effect was obtained with mexidol.
