Abstract

Relevance. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is one of the most common inflammatory diseases of the oral mucosa. The disease is accompanied by severe pain, difficulty eating and decreased quality of life, which necessitates the search for effective and safe means of local therapy. Aim. To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of the use of «FARMADONT I» collagen plates in the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis in adolescents in comparison with a dental gel based on choline salicylate. Material and methods. A pilot study was conducted with the participation of 24 adolescents aged 15–17 years with a diagnosis of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. The patients were divided into two equal groups of 12 people. In the main group, «FARMADONT I» collagen plates were used, in the control group, a dental gel based on choline salicylate. The effectiveness of treatment was assessed by the dynamics of pain syndrome, the timing of the onset of epithelialization and complete epithelialization of aphthous elements, as well as by subjective data. Results. In the main group, there was a decrease in pain by the 3rd day of treatment in 83.3% of patients versus 33.3% in the control group. Complete epithelialization by Day 5 was achieved in 100% (12/12) of patients treated with FARMADONT I compared with 25.0% (3/12) in the control group (p < 0.001, Fisher’s exact test). The use of the plates was accompanied by good tolerance, ease of use and absence of allergic reactions. Conclusion. «FARMADONT I» collagen strips are an effective and safe topical treatment for recurrent aphthous stomatitis in adolescents. Their use contributed to faster relief of pain and accelerated epithelialization of aphthous lesions. Their ease of use, rapid epithelialization, and absence of allergic reactions make them a recommended treatment for oral aphthous ulcers in adolescents.
