<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>Optimal maternal nutrition plays a critical role in ensuring a healthy pregnancy and normal fetal development. Maternal fatty acids are essential for the growth and development of the fetus, newborn and future adult. Humans are unable to synthesize polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and depend on dietary intake of PUFAs. Adequate maternal intake of two major omega‑3 PUFAs, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), during pregnancy and/or lactation is considered fundamental for normal fetal development to adulthood.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>питание матери</kwd><kwd>полиненасыщенные жирные кислоты</kwd><kwd>ПНЖК</kwd><kwd>фетальное программирование</kwd><kwd>эйкозапентаеновая кислота</kwd><kwd>ЭПК</kwd><kwd>докозагексаеновая кислота</kwd><kwd>ДГК</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>maternal nutrition</kwd><kwd>polyunsaturated fatty acids</kwd><kwd>PUFAs</kwd><kwd>fetal programming</kwd><kwd>eicosapentaenoic acid</kwd><kwd>EPA</kwd><kwd>docosahexaenoic acid</kwd><kwd>DHA</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group><funding-statement xml:lang="ru">Публикация выполнена при поддержке Программы стратегического академического лидерства РУДН.</funding-statement><funding-statement xml:lang="en">The publication was supported by the RUDN Strategic Academic Leadership Program</funding-statement></funding-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Mathias PC, Elmhiri G, de Oliveira JC, Delayre-Orthez C, Barella LF, Tófolo LP, Fabricio GS, Chango A, Abdennebi-Najar L.
