Одним из ключевых свойств мелатонина является его хронобиологическая способность, реализуемая многоуровневой синхронизацией биологических процессов. Физиологически секреция мелатонина повышается при наступлении темноты и снижается утром. В настоящее время доказана роль мелатонина в регуляции сна, циркадных ритмов, адаптации организма к быстрой смене часовых поясов. При снижении выработки эндогенного мелатонина у ряда людей (при расстройстве суточных биоритмов в связи с дальним перелетом, сменной работе, бессоннице) применение экзогенного мелатонина улучшает качество сна.</p></abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland and is a derivative of serotonin. One of the key properties of melatonin is its chronobiological ability, realized by multilevel synchronization of biological processes. Physiologically, melatonin secretion increases at night and decreases in the morning. At present, the role of melatonin in the regulation of sleep, circadian rhythms, and adaptation of the body to a rapid change in time zones has been proven.
