<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The results of a new method for detecting the contamination of intravascular catheters and drains are presented to assess its clinical and cost-effectiveness. Catheters are one of the most widely used devices in critically ill patients. The insertion of a catheter into the central venous system is an invasive procedure that can potentially lead to life-threatening complications for the patient. Catheters are a gateway for infection as they connect the external environment to the internal parts of the human body, causing catheter-associated infections. More than 15 % of patients with an established IVC develop complications, of which the most frequent and requiring removal of the vascular catheter are infectious (5–26 %) and mechanical (up to 25 %). Risk factors for catheter-associated conditions are crucial for hospital mortality.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>обсемененность катетеров</kwd><kwd>стерильность катетеров и дренажей</kwd><kwd>экономический эффект в медицине</kwd><kwd>ЦВК</kwd><kwd>оценка затрат в медицине</kwd><kwd>ускоренное исследование стерильности</kwd><kwd>скрининг бактериального роста</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>catheter observation</kwd><kwd>catheter and drain sterility</kwd><kwd>cost-effectiveness in medicine</kwd><kwd>CVCs</kwd><kwd>cost evaluation in medicine</kwd><kwd>accelerated sterility testing</kwd><kwd>bacterial growth screening</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">A new rapid method for direct antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacteria from positive blood cultures Simona Barnini, Veronica Brucculeri, Paola Morici, Emilia Ghelardi, Walter Florio and Antonella Lupetti; Barnini, et al.
